[...] Page 149: On racial and national antagonisms that preclude international cooperation: “I can only repeat that this is a matter for experiment, and that the experiment has never been tried. Racial and national antagonisms have been so fed, fostered, and inflamed, for the class and personal ends and interests that have controlled politics, that the deeper underlying sympathies and community of different peoples have never been permitted complete expression, much less personal assertion. The most potent and pervasive forces in the industrial, intellectual, and moral life of most European races, so far as the masses of the peoples are concerned, have so rapidly and closely assimilated during the last century as of necessity to furnish a large common body of thought and feeling, interests, and aspirations which furnish a “soul” for internationalism.” Cf. p.198. Laissez-faire capitalism is “ethically indefensible.” [end, Hobson quotes. As I reread these notes I am reminded of the founding principles of the Pacifica Foundation, which echo Hobson, almost word for word. See my blog http://clarespark.com/2009/08/13/my-life-at-pacifica-radio-a-memoir-part-one/] [...]

George, thanks so much for leaving a comment! And especially because you picked up on the explicit antisemitism that flourished and continues to flourish at the station African Mental Liberation Weekend nearly killed me, as did the strong positive response it elicited from many listeners.
By the way, all my papers from my service as Program Director are now at the University of California at Riverside in Special Collections.

Many thanks for your review, Clare. I have been a KPFK listener only since 1980, so I know little of earlier times and conflicts. I have to note that when KPFK entered its "Family Tree" anti-Jewish phase my support for it ended. As the bagel commerical reminds us, "you don't have to be Jewish" to object to anti-Jewishness. And to the point: I was glued to the radio during the upheaval and firings. I was distressed over the anarchy at the station, and often found it difficult to understand Marc Cooper's position(s), knowing very little of the station's origins other than what was broadcast by KPFK. Being a working-class guy long out of college, and not much of an intellectual at that, I had little knowledge of the underpinnings of the dissent at KPFK. Your retelling of your experiences has been very helpful in my understanding what transpired during that confused time. KPFK has since become a truly lackluster station. It used to be my favorite. I enjoyed the non-political shows immensely, from The Car Show to Infidelity, and even including the silly shows. And what was with the re-naming of Infidelity to On Fidelity? Something PC? Every now and then I press the KPFK button on my car radio, but it is no longer the default radio station of my earlier years.
